NCIL Partners with NYLN to Create Educational Program on Independent Living

NYLN LogoAs of January 1, 2013, The HSC Foundation awarded the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN) a $25,000 grant to create an educational program around independent living. Topic areas of the program curriculum include employment, financial literacy, travel opportunities, universal design, and more. Jessica Croner, NYLN’s past President, is serving as an Honorary Fellow to direct and oversee this project.

Collaboration is a vital part of this venture, so NYLN is working with two key organizations. The first is the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL), our partner for the grant. The second is the Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living (APRIL), a member of our planning team, and a link to young people from rural areas around the country.

A kick-off presentation will take place at the NCIL Conference, July 23 – 27, 2013, in Washington, DC. Additional conference presentations and public trainings will take place throughout the year. To be the first to know of these events, register to be an NYLN Member. These events will be announced through the NYLN list-serve and those of partnering organizations.

The HSC Foundation’s National Youth Transitions Initiative seeks to assist youth and young veterans with disabilities in creating and living a self-directed path to adulthood and employment. One way they fulfill this goal is by overseeing the National Youth Transitions Collaborative (NYTCo). The Collaborative is a learning community dedicated to improving the lives of young people with disabilities and young veterans. To learn more about the NYTCo, go to: www.thenytc.org.

NYLN is a youth-led organization that works to build power among people with disabilities between the ages of 16-28. NYLN understands that the “Future Needs Everyone” and is proud to be a member of the NYTCo. NYLN thanks The HSC Foundation for this opportunity to serve our community-at-large.
